"Game of Thrones" season 4 just got so much more exciting. Prince Oberyn Martell will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, who has previously appeared on on CBS' The Good Wife, ABC's Red Widow and USA's Graceland. The casting of the Red Viper was tough because not only must he been charismatic and sexy, he also has to be fierce.
"This was a tough one," creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss told Entertainment Weekly about the casting. "The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn't easy to find and he won't be easy to stop."
Oberyn Martell is a fan-favorite of book readers, and he is certain to become a favorite amongst the series watchers as well. "Game of Thrones" watchers have not met Martell face-to-face yet, you have heard snippets of information about his family, the Martells.
The Martell family comes from the south of Westeros, known as Dorne. Their birthplace is renowned for their fantastic wines, specially the Dornish Red which Cersei and Tyrion are so fond of. The Martells will become serious players in the "Game of Thrones" as season 4 progresses.
And as for "The Red Viper," he is the brash, cunning, fierce, and sexy Prince of Dorne. His sister Elia Targaryen the Princess of Dorne, was the wife of Prince Rhaeger Targaryen, who is Daenerys' older brother. Elia and her two children, Rhaenys and Aegon were brutally murdered in the sack of King's Landing during Robert's Rebellion. All three were murdered by the Lannister knight Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane when Mad King Aerys was overthrown by Robert Baratheon and the Lannisters.
Oberyn Martell isn't the only new face excepted to be introduced in season 4. George R.R. Martin confirmed that wildling Styr the Magnar of Thenn and Margaery Tyrell's father Mace Tyrell will also be cast, while rumor has it that Oberyn's paramour Ellaria Sand is going to be introduced as well.
"Game of Thrones" returns to HBO in spring of 2014.
