Episode 4 "And Now His Watch Has Ended" was another great episode of "Game of Thrones." I feel like Season 3 is really living up to the hype of being the best season yet. There is so much action, so many characters and so many instances of Daenerys being AWESOME!
I know what we are thinking so I'll jump right in, the last dragon really is killing it with fire and steel. Daenerys has sacked the city of Astapor so gracefully I'm pretty sure the entire audience was left in awe. After last week's episode, "Walk of Punishment," everyone was left with one question, "Is Daenerys really going to give away a dragon?"
And now we have our answer and so much more. No way would Daenerys give up one of her dragons, I mean she is the mother of Dragons. Like she needs them, they also need her.
Dany hands Master Kraznys her largest dragon, as he hands her the whip that deems her the owner of all 8,000 Unsullied soldiers. As if the scene couldn't get even more intense, Daenerys begins to speak in Valyrian, revealing she has known exactly what Kraznys has said during all of their exchanges. After she holds the whip, she commands the Unsullied with amazing force; she then tells Kraznys that "A dragon is not a slave" after he complains that the beasts will not be tamed.
With an intense battle cry, Daenerys commands the Unsullied to kill all the slave masters in Astapor and asks her lethal dragon child to burn Kraznys by simply stating "Dracarys."
This was absolutely the show's most exhilarating scene since the honorable Ned Stark lost his head at King's Landing.
OK -- so now on to the rest of the episode -- "And Now His Watch Has Ended" opened with a nearly dead Jamie and his severed hand swinging around his neck. After he falls off his horse and attempts a useless escape, Jamie is tricked into drinking horse urine and beaten to an even bloodier pulp. That night when they make camp, the audience views the bond between Jamie and Brienne growing stronger. She thanks him for saving her maidenhood and tells him to eat. When he reveals that he wishes to die, Brienne provides some tough love and advice.
"You have one taste of the real world, where people have important things taken from them, and you whine and cry and quit," she said. "You sound like a bloody woman." The Kingslayer then begins to eat.
There is still a lot of game playing occurring in King's Landing, King Joffrey and soon-to-be Queen Margaery continue their twisted romance, with sadistic Joff growing more fond of Margaery's interest in death and her cleavage. Margaery's influence on Joff has grown so deep that she even gets him to open the doors of the royal crypt and wave to the people of King's landing against Cersei's terrified warning.
Lady Olenna and Cersei are also in the royal crypt with the young lovebirds and they partake in an odd passive aggressive conversation about children and protecting them. I'm still not sure who was threatening who here, but both matriarchs are certainly on high alert.
The Lannisters are not the only ones to interact with the Tyrells in this episode. Both Varys and Sansa Stark have significant motives revealed, Varys's dark past is revealed to only expose an even darker and crueler future plan. Varys has a meeting with Littelfinger's new promoted northern whore and learns that he plans to take Sansa with him when he sails to the Eyrie. However, Varys and Lady Olenna seem to hatch a plan in which Sansa can marry one of the Tyrell men. Margaery's power of persuasion is not only wasted on Joffrey, but after a sweet girlish walk with Sansa, Margaery reveals her wish to become sisters and how she wants Sansa to marry her handsome brother, Loras.
Varys also reveals other future plans, however these plans are not as happy as arranged marriages but are only about revenge. Varys shows Tryion the contents of a large box after telling him the terrible story of his childhood and how exactly he became a eunuch. The contents of the box prove horrifying, it contains the sorcerer responsible for making Varys the "man" he is today.
Even the "Men of the Night's Watch" provide drama and excitement, after chaos breaks out in Craster's Keep, Lord Mormont is killed by his own "brother" and Craster is slain (who cares), Sam springs into heroic action and leads Gilly and her male baby away from the fight into the safety snow of the North.
Last, but not least, we see the brave Arya and the Brotherhood without Banners. The Brotherhood's leader Beric Dondarrion is revealed, and he puts the Hound on trial for his crimes against Westeros. After the Hound is able to deny his crimes several times, Arya speaks up and charges him with the crime of murdering Micah, the butcher's boy. Beric and the Hound will fight as a way for the one true God to judge Sandor's guilt or innocence. And Beric only had one eye, so the Hound seems pretty confident.
"Game of Thrones" Episode 5, "Kissed By Fire" will premiere next Sunday at 9 PM on HBO, and I think Jon Snow kisses a girl!
