Four teenagers hailing from the Auburndale area went to extreme lengths in a grisly face-off with another youngster and ran over his mother, Suzette Penton, 52.
Reports suggest that Elijah Stansell, 18, teamed up with his three friends: Raven Sutton, 16, Kimberly Stone, 15, and Hannah Eubank, 14, to Hunter, the victim's house, with an intention for a scuffle to settle an ongoing dispute that was allegedly romantic in nature. They now face multiple charges such as attempted felony murder, burglary with assault first-degree murder, lewd and lascivious battery on a minor, and the like.
On Nov. 9, Hunter, Penton's son, was physically assaulted at his place. But, things came to an abrupt halt with the suspects running away as soon as Penton arrived at the scene. Upon realizing what had just happened, she decided to follow them up and photographed them as they tried to flee the scene in a speeding van. Just as Penton recorded their moves on her phone; Stansell, who was driving a church van, intentionally rammed into her despite having ample space to maneuver without touching her.
While the suspects tried their best to escape, things got tougher as the entire episode was recorded on surveillance cameras. A bunch of eye-witnesses also came forward to testify about the crime. They were nabbed right in time, the suspect vehicle information was reportedly BOLO'ed (broadcast over the radio as "be on the lookout") and located by responding deputies and Auburndale Police Officers. Penton, on the other hand, was found in a rather critical condition by deputies who were summoned by Hunter.
The four admitted to fleeing the scene after injuring Penton, and planning the attack on Hunter during the investigation. What triggered the attack was an ongoing "post-dating disagreement" between Hunter and his ex, who is currently dating Stansell. While the two had broken up earlier, things spiraled out of control after the girl threatened to have Hunter beaten up by Stansell. Her suspension from school added to the chaos, which then had the group plan a confrontation with Hunter.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, on Monday, maintained that the four teenagers will be charged as adults for the heinous acts. Stansell, on the other hand, is booked into the Polk County Jail on the following charges:
• Attempted felony murder (F2)
• Burglary with assault (F1)
• 3 counts Contributing to the delinquency of a minor (M1)
He was additionally charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a minor (F2) on a victim 15 years old, a crime that was discovered after his arrest on Monday. The other three were charged with Attempted felony murder (F2), burglary with assault (f1).
Penton was pronounced dead on Nov. 25, 2020, after succumbing to serious injuries—a traumatic brain injury and several broken bones. She battled chronic issues owing to the accident, before dying.
The four were moved to the juvenile dorm at the Polk County Jail.
