Daryl Gowers, a serial rapist and sex offender, has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Gowers, who has a history of inflicting grisly sex crimes on women, victimized four, including a pregnant woman whom he met on a dating portal.
The 30-year-old convict from Leith was produced before High Court in Glasgow after rape allegations against him surfaced. Gowers will be placed under scrutiny by criminal justice social work experts for four years upon the completion of his jail term. He was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life after experts reportedly deemed Gowers to be at “high risk” of committing crimes in the future.
“One of the charges involved multiple rapes over a period of two years. Another involved a woman with significant learning difficulties and (the victim in final charge) was vulnerable, who you had met through an online dating service,” said the judge during the hearing.
Credible sources cite that Gowers’ attacks were largely committed between August 2013 and February 2018 across the borders in Edinburgh and Hawick, including Lochend Park and Balfour Street in Edinburgh between 2014- 2016.
Despite his conviction, Gower’s defense lawyer David Nicolson staunchly maintained in the court that his client “continues to deny these offenses.”
Following the sentencing hearing, “Daryl Gowers preyed on vulnerable women and his victims showed tremendous bravery by helping the police investigation and ensuring that he has now been held accountable for his actions,” said Detective Constable Rachel Robertson from Edinburgh’s Public Protection Unit, soon after Gowers sentencing came through.
“Gowers clearly thought he could get away with this despicable behavior, however, he was wrong. I hope that this sentencing sends a clear message that nobody is above the law and will encourage anyone who finds themselves subjected to this kind of crime to come forward. Police Scotland takes any reports of rape or sexual assault extremely seriously and will rigorously investigate all complaints. Anyone who believes they have been the victim of a sexual crime should report it by calling Police Scotland on 101,” he added.
