A terrorist attack by rebel group FARC has left one person dead and 25 injured after a motorcycle charged with 50 kilograms of explosives was detonated in the country's southwest. "We condemn the terrorist act in Pandera," wrote Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos on his Twitter account. Santos continued, calling the attack "contradictory and irrational." Defence Minister Juan Carlos Pinzón, Military Commander General Leonardo Alfonso Barrero and Police Commissioner Rodolfo Palomino have traveled to the area.
The explosion carried out by the rebel group was camouflaged in a motorcycle that was detonated in fronto of the mayoral office in the community of Pradera. The explosion was carried out 24 hours after the end of the unilateral truce declared by the rebel group from December 15, 2013 to January 15, 2014. "We attribute this attack directly to the sixth front of the FARC group. They are responsible for multiple attacks in this area and continually affect the community," said the region's police chief Colonel Mariano Botero.
Hours after the attack, one of the negotiators for the rebel group, alias 'Rodrigo Granda' expressed regret for the attack's casualties. He stated that FARC does not attack "the civilian population with impunity" explaining "we often use unconventional weaponry, guerilla equipment, which does not have the techonological possibilities necessary for striking a concrete objective. Sometimes it is diverted, causing involuntary damages." 'Granda' told Caracol TV that the atack had been aimed at a military target.
