California has all hands on deck to fight the wildfires ravaging large areas of Los Angeles, which have already resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people and the destruction of thousands of structures.
However, a significant portion of those hands have to remain idle after a Canadian plane contributing to the efforts had to be grounded following a crash with a civilian drone over restricted airspace.
The plane, known as a "Super Scooper," is a CL-415 model used to gather over 1,500 gallons of ocean waters and drop them over active fires, CNN detailed.
Los Angeles Fire Department Erik Scott said no injuries were reported after the incident but that "Quebec 1" remains grounded, with the LAFD showing images of the plane with a hole in the front of one of its wings.
Moreover, all aircraft responding to the Palisades Fire, the largest of all scorching the area, were grounded as well. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the collision and said it has not "authorized anyone unaffiliated with the Los Angeles firefighting operations to fly drones" in restricted areas.
The Palisades Fire has scorched nearly 20,000 acres — more than 30 square miles — and destroyed an estimated 5,000 structures. Only 6% of it remains contained, according to NBC News. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire near Pasadena has consumed 13,690 acres and leveled at least 4,000 structures, with no containment progress reported as of Thursday night.
Aerial views have made waves through social media, showing the scope of the destruction caused so far. And a map from AirNow details its full range by also indicating the amount of areas in which air quality is dangerous for residents.
The worst-hit areas are those near Malibu and Santa Monica, as well as Pasadena, Alhambra and Monterey Park. The organization's air sensor shows several areas with an "unhealthy" category, recommending "everyone should take precautions by reducing outdoor activity; go inside to cleaner air if you have symptoms." The same recommendations apply to areas in Long Beach, Willowbrook, and East Los Angeles, among others.
However, Pasadena, Alhambra and Monterey Park are under the worst conditions at the moment. Air quality is considered "very unhealthy." "Everyone limit or avoid outdoor physical activity," AirNow recommends.
