MLB fans could not hide their rage over claims that the Houston Astros cheated during their title run in 2017.
The controversial revelation was released by Mike Fiers, the team’s former pitcher who currently plays for the Oakland Athletics, saying, “That’s not playing the right way. They were advanced and willing to go above and beyond to win,” in an interview with the Athletic along with three other unnamed sources.
Fiers’ contract was non-tendered by Houston after winning the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the said year.
“I just want the game to be cleaned up a little bit because there are guys who are losing their jobs because they’re going in there not knowing,” Fiers continued.
Furious fans then took to social media and lambasted what to them is a disgrace to the sport and even going as far as asking to scrape off the Astros’ 2017 title.
This particular fan emphasized the need for a just implementation of penalties in order to save the reputation of the league. He went on to say, “ The Houston Astros are a disgrace to MLB. Harsh penalties should be given out. There's no way they get out of this unscathed.”
Then the rest followed suit and the outrage spread like wildfire since.
Upon learning the issue, the baseball club’s management responded by saying that their organization has started working with the MLB in investigating the sensitive matter.
"The Houston Astros organization has begun an investigation in cooperation with Major League Baseball."
“It would not be appropriate to comment further on this matter at this time,“ the statement ended.
Interestingly, the issue came about just weeks after the Astros’ assistant general manager Brandon Taubman was fired due to an incident where he was said to have targeted at least one female journalist after his team took down the New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series on Saturday night.
Taubmann was heard shouting towards the journalist and two others, “Thank God we got Osuna! I’m so f—–g glad we got Osuna!” referring to Roberto Osuna who they acquired last year. Osuna was earlier suspended for violating baseball’s domestic violence rules.
