An Italian doctor who referred to his genitals as the “Magic Flute” and made claims to female patients that sex with him would cure them of HPV infection is being investigated for possible malpractice and abuse.
Dr. Giovanni Miniello is a 60-year-old man who works as a gynecologist for the southern Italian city of Bari. An unconventional doctor, he claims to his patients that sex with him can cure HPV, which is known to cause cervical cancer, according to The Sunday Times.
However, one of his potential victims, Anna Maria, was skeptical of his practice. She claims that when she went to Miniello to get a pap smear to find out if she had HPV, the doctor instead offered to have sex with her to cure her of the infection, the New York Post reported.
Suspicious of Miniello’s practices, Anna Maria contacted the local Italian newspaper La Repubblica and told them the story. Later on, she also told the news program Le Iene, which sent an actress to find out the veracity of her claims, Eminetra reported.
The actress claimed to have “white spots” on her cervix, and Miniello immediately offered to have sex with her, saying that he can transfer his immunity to her since he has been vaccinated for HPV. He also told her not to use condoms so she can receive the full benefits of the “cure”.
Miniello was confronted by journalists before he could have sex with the actress. After being questioned, Miniello stood his ground and stated that his method has been tested with positive results and that all his interactions have been consensual.
“I, who have successfully treated hundreds of women for over 40 years … only proposed an alternative treatment that has yielded results,” Miniello said through his lawyer.
Authorities in Bari have launched an investigation against Miniello for possible misconduct and abuse of power, with 15 women already coming forward since the airing of the news report on Italian television.
“[Authorities] have received several reports in the last few days, dozens. Women who have come together and gone through a similar situation. Some consider reporting it, others are afraid, also because the level of secondary victimization we are witnessing is very high,” Marika Massara from the Anti-Violence Center said.
