A 17-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted at a hospital by a doctor. The hospital manager reportedly lured the girl into the doctor’s cabin where the alleged crime occurred, authorities said.
The accused, identified as Rajinikanth, a popular orthopedic doctor working at GC Hospital in Karur, Tamil Nadu, India was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing the minor, who is the daughter of a female staff at the hospital.
The incident came to light when the 37-year-old woman, who worked in the accounts division, approached the Karur all-women police station on Nov. 13 and filed a complaint against the doctor alleging that he had sexually harassed her minor daughter.
The victim’s mother stated in her complaint that Saravanan, a manager at the hospital was the one who took the girl to the doctor, India Today reported.
Based on the woman’s complaint, the police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the accused doctor and the hospital manager.
Saravanan was arrested immediately but, Rajinikanth was on the run, police said. A manhunt was issued to nab the absconding doctor.
As the search proceeded, investigators received a tip from an unidentified source revealing the doctor’s whereabouts.
Based on the information, the police responded to the provided location and were successful in nabbing the suspect. Dr. Rajinikanth was arrested. He has been remanded to the Karur jail for 15 days.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 16-year-old girl with physical disabilities was allegedly raped by her 40-year-old physiotherapist for over a year at his clinic in suburban Santacruz, Mumbai, India.
The minor victim who suffers from speech impairment and other physical disabilities revealed that the accused allegedly used to rape her whenever she would visit his clinic. Her parents, who waited outside the physiotherapist’s cabin, were reportedly unaware of the crime, police said.
According to the police, the accused has allegedly been sexually assaulting the teenager for more than a year.
However, the alleged crime came to light only last week when the victim sent a text message to her parents, narrating her ordeal.
The teen victim’s parents approached the police on Oct. 21 and filed a complaint against the therapist.
He has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 376 (rape), and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the official said.
