Former President Donald Trump is furious and so, he slammed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in a dispute over the Grand Old Party (GOP) Senate mid-term campaign.
The senior senator from Kentucky should spend more money and time helping Republican Senate candidates get elected, said Trump, according to Business Insider. Trump feels that McConnell should spend "less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China." He made the disparaging comment about McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao.
Apart from serving as Trump's Transportation Secretary, she was one of the first Cabinet officials to resign after the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. She reportedly spoke to the Jan. 6 committee earlier this month.
Trump wrote on Truth Social why do Republicans Senators allow a "broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate."
GOP nominees in America's most closely contested states are struggling to keep up, recent polling showed. This includes candidates JD Vance in Ohio, Herschel Walker in Georgia and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania who are backed by Trump.
McConnell and Trump, who were once allies, have been publicly feuding since Trump lost in the 2020 U.S. Presidential election. McConnell appeared to accept Joe Biden's victory. He also condemned the former President for being "practically and morally responsible" for the Jan. 6 riot.
Trump's latest comment came after McConnell suggested Thursday that he did not think Republicans would retake the Senate, reported Fox News. He said that "candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome," and noted that his party may fare better in reclaiming the US House. He shared that he thinks there's probably a "greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate." He noted that senate races are just different, they are statewide, and that "candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome."
Trump had also slammed McConnell's wife, whose father founded the shipping company Foremost Group where her sister serves as CEO, The Hill reported. Chao has no formal ties to the business, but she and her husband faced questions over potential conflicts of interest during her time in the White House. They were questioned whether she used the U.S. government's resources to support her family’s business.
According to the report, Foremost Group is a Chinese company. However, a representative of the company reached out to Latin Times to clarify that Foremost Group is a US-based and US-founded shipping company.
