A mother attempted to kill herself after allegedly slitting the throat of her two children. While one child succumbed to the injuries the other continues battling for life.
Police said the incident occurred on Sunday, August 8, in the Ghosipura village of Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh, India.
According to the Katghar police, the mother, identified as Preeti, often engaged in altercations with her husband, Devendra over financial issues.
Devendra, who works as a contractor at a private firm, reportedly got his paycheques late, which put the family under a financial crisis.
Preeti had frequent fights with her husband and had been forcing him to look for a different firm to work with.
On the night of the incident, Preeti got into a heated argument with her husband, following which she committed the gruesome crime, police said.
The family members alerted the authorities when they found the children lying in a pool of blood. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and located the victims lying unresponsive on the floor.
One of the victims, 4-year-old Adarsh was pronounced dead at the scene. Preeti and her elder son, 6-year-old Daksh were rushed to a private medical facility in the Pakhwara area.
Preeti’s mother-in-law, Munni Devi told the police that their daughter-in-law had attacked the children with a sharp object while they were asleep.
Moradabad SP Amit Anand said, "The woman, according to the family, was having some dispute with her husband."
Adarsh’s body was sent to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. No updates were available about the current health condition of Preeti and Daksh.
Moradabad police said the mother took the extreme step as she was mentally disturbed.
A case has been registered against the mother under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
In a similar but unrelated incident, an upset mother plunged to her death after throwing her 5-year-old son from a bridge following an argument with her husband.
On July 25, the woman, identified as Chandana, a resident of Mallasandra, near Holiday village in South Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, had recently received a job offer which her husband strongly disapproved of.
According to the police, following an argument with her husband, Chandana rushed to the bridge which is few meters away from her home. Once there, she threw her son 70ft down the bridge and plunged onto the busy road below.
The child died on the scene, police said. Chandana was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead the next day.
