Disney has seemingly crowned Mexican actor and producer Diego Luna as the new king of the Star Wars universe, leaving previous eras of the iconic franchise in the past.: Luna's series 'Andor' is set to make history as the most expensive 'Star Wars' production ever.
Its second and final season, premiering April 22 on Disney+, carries a record-breaking budget, surpassing all previous films and series in the franchise, according to Forbes.
A financial report revealed that the cost of producing 'Andor''s second season reached $290.9 million, potentially rising even higher. This figure eclipses the $280.7 million spent on 2017's 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi,' previously the franchise's most expensive title.
A big year for Diego Luna
The announcement solidifies 2025 as a milestone year for Luna. He will kick off the year with a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series thanks to his work in 'La Máquina,' which he produced and starred in alongside his longtime friend and collaborator, Gael García Bernal.
Shortly after Luna will return to the Star Wars galaxy with the highly anticipated second season of 'Andor.' Luna first played Cassian Andor in the 2016 film 'Rogue One,' and his connection to the character has only deepened since then.
What to expect from 'Andor' season 2
A prequel to 'Rogue One,' 'Andor' follows the title character's transformation from a selfish, small-time weapons dealer into a devoted operative for the Rebel Alliance fighting against the Galactic Empire.
After its premiere in 2022, the critically-acclaimed first season became one of the most popular shows in the Star Wars franchise. The series would go on to win a prestigious Peabody Award and earn three Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series.
The 12-episode second season will reportedly span four years, divided into three-episode arcs, each covering a few consecutive days in different years leading up to the events of 'Rogue One.'
The cast includes Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O'Reilly, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough, Faye Marsay, and Varada Sethu.
