
It was the final corner at the Nationwide race when Regan Smith got turned from a bump draft by Brad Keselowski. Losing the rear, Smith's No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro smacks the wall sideways, causing a major pileup involving multiple cars in the pack.
Kyle Larson's car was also involved in the crash as the impact lifted his front wheels and sent him flying into the Daytona catch fence. A shocking impact, Larson's car disintegrated and even tore a hole in the fence as parts of his engine and wheels flew as far as nine rows up in the grandstands, causing serious injuries to a number of racing fans. When Kyle Larson's car finally came to a rest at the infield, it was clear that everything in front of the cockpit was all gone.
According to authorities, one of the fans has suffered a "life-threatening" head injury while another child was also sent to the Halifax Medical Center for treatment.
A track marshall reported that a woman wrapped a tourniquet around her leg. Other fans suffered burns and one fan was even struck by the tire from Larson's car.
A difficult end to the Nationwide race, Tony Stewart managed to miss the carnage and bring the car home in first place.
Thankfully, Larson emerged fromt he wreck under his own power and was quickly evaluated and released from the infield care center.
NASCAR President Mike Helton joined ESPN in the booth to address what had just happened at the end of Nationwide.
"I think to see and explain what we know right now is there obviously was some intrusion into the fence, and fortunately with the way the event's equipped up, there was plenty of emergency workers ready to go. They all jumped in on it pretty quickly,"said Helton.
"Right now it's a function of trying to determine of what all damage is done. They're moving folks as we've seen to care centers and taking some folks over to Halifax Medical Center. We'll be able to update you later on, but all we know is everybody is working hard on what all happened."
