AMA's Artist of the 2010s Decade, Taylor Swift, is not backing down from any misogynistic attacks leveled against her, picking holes in Damon Albarn’s remarks on her songwriting after the virtual band Gorillaz frontman accused her of not writing her songs.
The “Fearless” singer, 32, whose advocacy of artists' rights and woman empowerment in the music industry has placed her in center stage, did not mince words when she called out Albarn, 53, on Twitter for discrediting her lyrical prowess, E! Online reported.
"@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this," she wrote on Twitter. "I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don't have to like my songs but it's really f--ked up to try and discredit my writing. WOW."
She would add, "PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering."
The issue stems from his interview with journalist Mikael Wood, who refuted Damon's accusation that Swift does not write her lyrics. When Wood said that the Billboard Woman of the 2010s Decade co-writes some of her songs, Damon insisted it doesn't count.
"I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different from writing,” Albarn continued. “I'm not hating anybody. I'm just saying there's a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes. That doesn't mean that the outcome can't be really great.”
Soon after the controversy broke out, Swifties began to rally in support of “The Man” hitmaker. Even her “folklore” and "evermore" collaborator, Aaron Dessner, came to her defense on the online platform, tagging Albarn in his tweet to say: "Not sure why you @Damonalbarn would try to discredit Taylor's brilliant songwriting but as someone who has gotten to press record around her. Your statements couldn't be further from the truth...you're obviously completely clueless as to her actual writing and work process."
The hive of activities from Swifties trying to disparage the Blur lyricist’s remarks would eventually bring about a favorable outcome after the record producer apologized for his mistake, according to Billboard.
“I totally agree with you,” Albarn said. “I had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait. I apologize unreservedly and unconditionally. The last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting. I hope you understand.”
In the same interview, Albarn compared Swift's music to Billie Eilish's. He admitted he is more inclined to the 20-year-old's lyrical pieces, which he described as exceptionally dark, less endlessly upbeat, and odd.
The Insider noted that Eilish also co-writes her music with her older brother and producer, Finneas O'Connell, who is the sole writer of her most popular songs, "Ocean Eyes" and "When The Party's Over."
