A 38-year-old man allegedly stabbed a teen girl and her mother for rejecting his marriage proposal.
The incident occurred on Sunday, Aug.15, in Kanganheri village in the Kapashera area of Delhi, India.
The injured were identified as 40-year-old Laali, a field laborer, and her 18-year-old daughter, Ruby, police said on Monday.
The accused, Ramu, a daily wage laborer, was a friend of Laali's late husband and lived near her house, police said.
Around 8 pm on Sunday, Ramu visited Laali's house and asked her to let him marry her daughter.
When Laali refused his request, an argument broke out between the two, police said.
The heated verbal exchange eventually escalated into a physical assault during which the suspect stabbed the two women with a "sharp-edged iron weapon with an intention to kill them", a senior police officer said.
The suspect sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. He attempted to flee the scene but was surrounded by the neighbors, who had responded to the home after hearing the screams of the victims.
The victims and the suspect were later taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No updates were available about the victims' current health condition.
After the woman filed a complaint, the police registered a case of an attempt to murder against the accused, according to news agency PTI.
"Based on the victim's statement, we have registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code at Chhawla police station. The accused has been arrested and is in police custody," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Santosh Kumar Meena told PTI.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 19-year-old college student, a resident of Kurla in Mumbai, India, hanged himself to death after his alleged girlfriend refused his marriage proposal during a video call.
The teen was found hanging by a belt at his home on Aug. 1.
According to the police, the teen boy reportedly initiated a video call with the girl and told her that he was going to kill himself because she rejected his proposal.
The police have registered a case and the incident is being investigated as an "accidental death", an investigating officer said.
