Angry Mob Assaults Widow, Forcefully Chops Her Hair For Rejecting Their Marriage Proposal

An angry village mob attacked a widow and forcefully chopped her hair after alleging she was having an affair with her brother-in-law. The suspects started the rumor because the woman rejected their marriage proposals.

The incident occurred on July 28, at the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India.

According to reports from local media, the woman’s husband died nearly three years ago, due to reasons unknown. She had been living with her two sons at her husband’s house with her in-laws.

Reportedly, the woman’s deceased husband’s elder brother, identified as Paritosh Sardar, and a few local men had shown interest and proposed to marry her.

The widow, however, rejected their proposals. The woman’s rejection enraged the men, who threatened the woman to leave the village.

Subsequently, the woman’s brother-in-law, identified as Khudiram Sardar, defended the widow and stepped in to help her.

That’s when Paritosh and the other men accused the widow of having an illicit affair with Khudiram.

On Wednesday evening, Paritosh along with few other villagers allegedly beat up the woman severely injuring her before chopped off her hair. The group also assaulted Khudiram until he became unresponsive.

Once Khudiram gained back his consciousness, the accused group forced both victims out of the village.

The widow reported to be in her 30’s, approached the police, and filed a complaint against Paritosh and seven others.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case against the accused and initiated an investigation.

Two accused have been located and arrested, police said. Efforts are being put in to nab the remaining suspects. A probe is underway.

In a similar but unrelated incident, a man brutally axed his father and wife to death in front of his own children after suspecting an illicit affair between the two in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India on July 2.

The accused, identified as 35-year-old Santosh Lodhi, allegedly found his 65-year-old father, Aman Singh Lodhi, and his wife, 32-year-old Kavita Lodhi, in a comprising position in his house, and in a fit of rage, axed them to death in front of his two children.

After the stabbing, Santhosh went to his uncle, Arjun Lodhi, who lived next door and confessed to committing the double murder. He then asked his uncle to alert the authorities about the incident.

A team of policemen arrived at the home and arrested the suspect.
