The Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon has stated that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival at the club in 2018 made an ultimate impact in Turin that led to them losing their "DNA of being a team."
Ronaldo, who is now back at Manchester United, scored 101 goals in 135 appearances for Juventus and won two Serie A titles. However, the club did not progress beyond the Champions League quarter-final stage during his three years stay in Turin.
"Juventus had the chance to win the Champions League the first year he arrived, which was the year I was at Paris Saint-Germain, and I couldn't figure out what happened," Buffon told American broadcast network TUDN.
Buffon was under Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) when Ronaldo signed but he rejoined Juventus in 2019. "When I returned, I worked with Ronaldo for two years and we did well together, but I think Juventus lost that DNA of being a team. We reached the Champions League final in 2017 because we were a side full of experience, but above all we were a single unit and there was this competition for places within the group that was very strong. We lost that with Ronaldo," Buffon added.
Juventus failed to take home that prestigious prize since 1996. The Portuguese legend has always been the center of attention in Turin. Ronaldo was supposed to help achieve a much-anticipated Champions League crown for Serie A heavyweights but departed for Manchester United in 2021.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has been pulling off well with partner Georgina Rodriguez as they are expecting twins, a boy and a girl next year. The couple and their four children were also seen all dressed up for their Christmas eve celebration. All in matching red pajamas delighting fans with a family Christmas snap.
The football superstar's mother, Dolores can also be seen smiling for the cameras as the Ronaldo family all lined up to pose for a photo on the staircase next to the big Christmas tree of their Manchester mansion. Ronaldo captioned the post, "From the bottom of my heart, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas."
