Central American rivals Honduras and Costa Rica will face off on Friday, Oct. 11 at 5pm EST in the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula, Honduras in a key World Cup qualifier. All the pieces are in place for a furiously played game: aside from the two being historic rivals, Honduras can qualify for the 2014 World Cup if they get a win today. Costa Rica has already qualified, with 15 points in eight games, while Honduras will be hoping that Panama and Mexico tie when those two play tonight. The last time the two teams played each other was June 7 of this year, when Costa Rica eked out a 1-0 victory in San Jose. But Honduras, which sits in third place with 11 points - three ahead of both Mexico and Panama - is undefeated at home with two draws and two victories. And they're fresh off an emotional victory against Mexico at the Azteca. That, plus home field advantage and, possibly, the fact that the temperature at game time is slated to reach a sweltering 95 degrees Fahrenheit, means the scales might be tipped a bit toward a Honduras victory. If they do get the win against Costa Rica today, they'd have to do no more than earn a draw against Jamaica - who sit at the bottom of the Hexagonal standings - to assure themselves a spot at the Cup in Brazil.
Honduras only needs four points in their last two matches to get to Rio de Janeiro in 2014. Futnsoccer notes that the possibility of a meltdown isn't entirely out of the question, as in their last home game against Panama, they had a less-than-stellar performance even as they came off the historic "Aztecazo", tying Panama 2-2. "It is going to be a difficult game, they are going to come in here wanting to beat us," Honduras defender Victor Bernardez told the Daily Star. "But for me, this is a great opportunity to give everything to qualify."
Stoke City midfielder Wilson Palacios, who has been a key player for Honduras in this year's qualifying matches - including in that game against Panama, when he left jaws agape with a solo goal - told Fifa.com that his team "[knows] Costa Rica well", adding, ""They're a difficult opponent for us, but all of us in the team believe in ourselves and we're going to put in some hard work as we go all-out for a win."
