Google today recognized Carlos Fuentes on the 85th anniversary of his birth as a writer, intellectual, diplomat and proud Mexican. Google's doodle depicted the famed writer in front of an endless, desolate Mexican landscape. Carlos Fuentes was born in Panama City in 1928. He had a highly international and intellectual upbringing, traveling the world with his diplomat father. He studied law at Mexico's Autonomous University (UNAM), frequently leaving the country to explore the world but always returning to his Mexican roots.

Carlos Fuentes began his literary career in 1955 when he founded the Mexican Literature Review with Emmanuel Carvallo and Octavio Paz. In 1959, he published his first novel, "Where The Air Is Clear." This was followed by such notable examples as "Aura," "The Old Gringo" and "The Death of Artemio Cruz." In its obiturary to the great writer, The New York Times described him as "one of the most admired writers in the Spanish-speaking world," while The Guardian called him "Mexico's most celebrated novelist."

Carlos Fuentes died the 15th of May 2012. He was awarded the Romulo Gallegos Prize in 1977, the Miguel Cervantes Prize in 1987 and the Belisario Dominguez Medal of Honor in 1999. He was also given the Great Cross of the Order of Isabella in 2008.
