Juan, Alex and Luis Fuentes, three brothers between the ages of 8 and 12, were found stabbed to death in a car near a school in South Los Angeles on Wednesday. Authorities have named their father as prime suspect in the killings.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck told ABC Los Angeles that the boys’ bodies were found in the back seat of an SUV with their dad, identified as Luis Fuentes, bleeding from stab wounds in the front seat. Fuentes was removed from the car and taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center where he is being held in critical condition.
John Sorrentino, who works near the crime scene, was the first person to spot the happenings and immediately called 911, "I noticed a guy was all bloody as I walked up to the car. As I approached a little bit closer, I noticed a young boy on a passenger side rear seat crouched against the door, blood all over him, and his eyes were half open, and I looked to see if there was any kind of beat on his chest and there was nothing," he said. "I yelled at the guy and he was breathing, but gasping. It didn't look like an attack on him. Doors were closed. He had a box cutter."
Officer Beck, who confirmed the murder weapon was retrieved from the scene, tells the media: "These are horrific incidents. These are incidents that scar not only a community but the first responders who have to handle them. It's a sad day in Los Angeles made only slightly better by the fact that we have a probable suspect in custody.”
Residents in South Los Angeles held a memorial Wednesday night to pray for the brothers at 32nd Street, where the murders happened. Family members, who identified the father, couldn’t believe the facts when they talked to the police: "He loved his kids and it's hard for me to see him do something like this. It's unbelievable. I don't know what drove him to do something like this," said Rene Chanquin, the father's cousin.
As the investigation continues, officials report a fight between the kids’ father and their stepmother as a possible motive. The suspect is still hospitalized and in a stable condition. The boys’ biological mother died of aneurysm in 2008.
