Jennifer Aniston did not saw it coming when Brad Pitt decided to call it quits in 2005. After assuring her that no other woman was involved, the actor promptly replaced the “Friends” star with Angelina Jolie, his co-star in “Mr. And Mrs. Smith.”
Pitt opted to remain mostly silent in the months that followed, a wise decision amid the media frenzy in the aftermath of his divorce from Aniston and subsequent pairing with Jolie. However, there was one interview that might have hinted at the real reason behind their split, aside from the usual “irreconcilable differences” cited in the divorce papers.
In a nutshell, Pitt felt “pathetic” during his marriage to Aniston, and he suspected that their marriage might have something to do with it. “I spent the ’90s trying to hide out,” he revealed to Parade. “I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic.”
“I think my marriage [to Jennifer] had something to do with it: trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t,” the “Fight Club” actor added.
In the same interview, the actor also hinted that he is “satisfied” with his new life with Jolie. “I put much more emphasis on being a satisfied man,” the actor also told Parade. “I’m satisfied with making true choices and finding the woman I love, Angie, and building a family that I love so much.”
Pitt also highlighted the fact that having children with Jolie was one of the greatest decisions he made. “One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom. She is such a great mom. Oh, man, I’m so happy to have her,” he added.
However, this satisfaction proved to be short-lived as well. Jolie later filed for divorce from Pitt in September 2016, citing the usual “irreconcilable differences” once more.
Of course Pitt later had to backtrack some of his statements after receiving backlash from both his and Aniston’s fans. “The point I was trying to make is not that Jen was dull, but that I was becoming dull to myself — and that, I am responsible for,” the actor clarified.
