Following a 2-0 loss to Spanish Primera Division rival Real Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals, Atlético Madrid learned they could face penalty for an incident involving a member of the opposition. Los Blancos solidified their place in the Spanish Cup final by way of a 5-0 semifinal aggregate, with 2013 Ballon d’Or Award winner Cristiano Ronaldo notching two early penalty goals to help seal the deal for Real. Heading toward the locker room at the conclusion of the opening half however, Ronaldo was struck in the head by a lighter that was tossed from the crowd in his direction, an incident that didn’t sit well with many of Ronaldo’s teammates.

Though he was pleased with his club’s two-legged performance, Real Madrid keeper and captain Iker Casillas doesn’t want this incident to overshadow the passion Atlético Madrid fans share for the game of football. The 32-year-old also noted that the actions of one individual should be taken seriously because the throwing of the object could have seriously hurt someone. “There is always someone that tries to smear the image of a club like Atlético Madrid,” he said. “It does not reflect how the majority of their fans are. I think the consequences could be serious because it could have hurt a player.”

Alberto Undiano Mallenco, match official for the semifinal at Vicente Calderón, filed the lighter incident in his official post match report following Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory. With the report sent to the Spanish FA, Atlético now faces the possibility of receiving a fine worth 30,000 euros while also experiencing the potential closing of their home pitch for one to three contests. “The Calderon is a stadium that shows its affection for its team,” Real defender Sergio Ramos said. “This stains and spoils a spectacle like football. The cameras are there for things like this, and if they find him they should ban him for a long time.”

Despite dipping to the ground after being hit with the lighter, Ronaldo was quickly back on his feet and never showed an negative effects from the impact. CR7 and company now await the outcome of the Copa del Rey semifinal between Barcelona and Real Sociedad, which takes place February 12 at 4:00pm, ET.
