Last week, Lexus rumors surfaced on the next LS flagship, hinting a new engine range that will significantly improve fuel economy. More importantly, Lexus may drop its heavier and less fuel efficient V8 engine for an all V6 lineup.
Apparently, the Japanese marque isn't the only premium luxury brand with that idea. Jaguar has announced a major powerplant update for its Jaguar XJ luxury sedan. For the 2013 model year, Jaguar's flagship XJ sedan will offer an all-new supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a new eight-speed automatic gearbox. Combined, Jaguar claims its new supercharged V6 will increase fuel efficiency by 14 percent over the entry level 5.0 liter V8. As the standard V8 was rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, we expect the new supercharged V6 to achieve 18mpg/26 mpg city/highway.
With a modest 335-hp and 331 lb.-ft. of torque at its disposal, the big cat takes a modest 5.7 seconds to reach from 0-to-60 mph. Comparatively, the outgoing V8 XJ enjoys 385-hp and 380 lb.-ft. of torque on tap, taking a significant 0.3 less seconds to reach the 60 mph benchmark.
Jaguar will continue offering the V6 diesel and top range-topping 510-hp supercharged V8 XJ Supersport.
Other than the new engine, the 2013 Jaguar XJ also features new spring and damper rates for better ride quality on the road. Occupants will be further pampered by the new 825 Meridian sound system. Prices will start at $65,365 for the supercharged V6 trimmed XJ.
