A Kenyan woman who reportedly believed that she was possessed by the "spirit of Princess Diana" and killed her roommate before chopping his genitals off to "protect Prince William" has been found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity.
Grace Miano, 53, also known as "Margaret Sloane," has been charged with the gruesome murder of Malawian man Limbani "Robert" Mzoma, 27, in Tudor Lawns, Foxrock, Co Dublin, on Nov. 1, 2018.
Mzoma was reportedly found lying on his back in a pool of blood with his penis and testicles removed when two of his male friends went to Tudor Lawns on the night of Nov. 1, 2018. Post-mortem evidence revealed that he had suffered stab wounds to his eyes and skull, had multiple lacerations and bruising to his body, and that his genitals had been removed after death, the Daily Star reported.
A consultant psychiatrist reportedly told the Central Criminal Court in a previous hearing that Miano was "possibly the most floridly schizoaffected person" he had ever met.
Miano reportedly believed that she was effectively possessed by Princess Diana, who came to tell her what she had done, Michael Bowman SC, her defense counsel, told the jury.
"She was not in her right mind, and claims that the day after [the killing], Princess Diana told her she was the one who did it," he said.
Miano told the officers that she reportedly killed Mzoma to "protect Prince William" and had cut off his genitals after death "to protect women." She also alleged that she was inhabited by the spirits of Princess Diana and other British royals to stop Kate Middleton's plot to put Prince William and Prince Harry in danger, Irish Mirror reported.
The psychiatrists independently concluded that Miano was suffering from forms of paranoid schizophrenia, a mental disorder. They told the court that Miano did not know what she was doing was wrong and that she was unable to refrain from her actions.
James Dwyer SC told the court that the State's application was for Miano to be examined at a designated center for 14 days to figure out if she requires inpatient treatment. Justice Paul McDermott granted the application, remanded Miano, and also extended his condolences to Mzoma's family.
Miano was told to reappear at the Central Criminal Court on Oct. 11 for the production of a psychiatric report.
