A woman reportedly killed herself by hanging a noose from a tree after murdering her own 8-month-old infant in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, India on Tuesday, June 7.

The 30-year-old woman, identified as Pinki Haldar, is suspected to have smothered her 8-month-old daughter Jahnvi to death before hanging herself from a tree. The bodies of the mother and the daughter were found in a wooded area around two kilometers from the Sookhi river, Uttarakhand, India on Tuesday, June 7.

Halder had reportedly come to her father's house in Rudrapur village of Shaktifarm on May 29. However, on Saturday, June 4, she left their house early in the morning without informing anyone about where she was going and carried her infant daughter along with her. When she did not return after several hours, her family members along with some locals and police officers searched around the village to find the mother and her newborn daughter, the Times Of India reported.

After a thorough search, the mother's body was finally found hanging from a tree in the woods around two kilometers from the Sookhi river on Tuesday, June 7. The infant was discovered dead on the ground, with strangulation marks on her face and neck, beside the tree. However, no suicide note was found in the area.

“She had an eight-year-old son and an eight-month-old Jahnvi. She had come to meet us with her children on May 29. On Saturday, she left the house early in the morning with her daughter but without letting anyone know. We searched for her and informed her in-laws as well,” Station House Officer (SHO) Shaktifarm Sanjeet Kumar said.

“The woman was found hanging from a tree in the woods around two kilometers from the Sookhi river. The baby was also found dead with strangulation marks on her face and neck. There was no suicide note found. We have sent the bodies for postmortem examination. The exact causes of the death can be ascertained only after receiving the autopsy reports. So far, no complaint has been received but we are probing the incident from all angles, including harassment and domestic violence,” Kumar added.

The woman reportedly got married to Nitayi Haldar of Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh nine years ago.
