A woman who was fed up with her husband's unemployment and alcoholism allegedly strangled him to death before proceeding to stuff his body inside a sack with the help of her underage son in Pitampura, New Delhi, India on Saturday, April 9.
The murder came to light after the victim's remains were discovered inside a jute bag near the entrance gate of Mahila Park located in Pitampura on Sunday, April 10. A preliminary investigation revealed that the body belonged to a man named Bharat Lal and that he lived with his wife and their two children, a 13-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter, at a nearby construction site, the Times Of India reported.
Lal's autopsy later revealed that the man had a ligature mark on his neck and some bleeding in his nose.
Following this, the authorities questioned the victim's wife, Laxmi Devi. She stated that her husband had gone missing the previous night, on Saturday. Devi also related that he was last seen alive as he left their house at around 10 p.m. to visit a local market.
However, officers subsequently noticed discrepancies in her statements as she repeatedly changed her version of events. After being taken into custody, she confessed that she had killed her husband out of spite.
Devi married Lal fifteen years ago at Sillarpura village in Madhya Pradesh, India. The suspect claimed that the unemployed and alcoholic victim repeatedly abused her whenever he was in an inebriated state. After growing tired of the domestic violence, Devi allegedly decided to kill him after slipping him a large number of sleeping pills.
On Saturday, she mixed 15 pills into her husband's liquor bottle. After Lal fell asleep following drinking the alcohol, Devi straggled her husband to death. She subsequently got her underage son to help her stuff the victim's body into a sack. Later that night, the woman carted her husband's remains on a bicycle and dumped the sack in Pitampura, India Today reported.
From the crime scene, officers recovered the tainted liquor bottle, as well as the drawstring used to choke the victim to death. The woman was arrested on Monday, April 11. Meanwhile, her son received counseling and was later sent to a correctional home.
