A Bronx woman has been reported dead after she was allegedly hit by a car and pinned against a fence in a freak accident on Friday, Sept. 9.
Paulina Nrecaj, a 59-year-old stay-at-home mother of three and grandmother of one, was reportedly on her way to purchase a pizza for her family when she was sideswiped by a gray Lexus SUV in front of her building at 2040 Bronxdale Avenue at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, Daily News reported.
According to investigating officers, the 2016 Lexus SUV allegedly jumped the curb after he swerved to avoid hitting a van stopped at the intersection of Bronxdale and Cruger avenues. The vehicle reportedly pushed the victim into a metal fence, sending a spike through her. After hitting the victim, the vehicle kept moving and crashed into the building behind the woman.
However, a neighbor, identified as Francisco Dayron, 36, who saw the collision, said that the SUV driver crashed into her while he was trying to avoid hitting someone on a scooter.
Following the incident, Nrecaj was immediately taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she died after undergoing emergency surgery. The driver of the Lexus SUV was also taken to Jacobi where he underwent treatment for his injuries and remains in stable condition, New York Post reported.
“She was a good, sweet woman. She was a very good sweet woman,” the victim's daughter, Diana Nrecaj, 32, said. “She didn’t deserve this. She was four steps away from her home.”
When the accident happened, the victim's husband Frane Nrecaj, 71, was upstairs in the family’s apartment and rushed to the street after hearing a thump. Frane said he knew right away that his wife of 40 years wasn’t going to make it.
“She was passed out. She lost a lot of blood coming from her mouth, a lot of blood coming from her nose,” Diana said.
“To me, she was a great person. She raised my kids. She was perfect. The kids were happy in their life. She was happy,” Frane said.
Neighbor Vanessa Gonzalez, 34, said that she had known Nrecaj since birth and recalled that she was a beautiful person and very kind-hearted.
“My heart is so broken,” Gonzalez said. “After my father passed away, she was an excellent friend to my mom."
The authorities have yet to charge anyone in connection with the incident. An investigation into the tragedy remains ongoing.
