A 25-year-old Indian woman who was allegedly raped by her uncle, a police officer, several times over the past two years tried to end her life by jumping into the river Ganga, police said on Monday, Sept. 13.
According to the investigators, the woman, a resident of Mirzapur district in Uttar Pradesh, had jumped into the river on Sunday evening but was rescued by divers and police personnel who were present in the area.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Pramod Kumar said that a case has been registered on the basis of the woman's complaint.
In the complaint, the victim alleged that her uncle, a traffic police constable, had invited her family to Allahabad in Jan. 2019 to attend the Kumbh festival.
The woman claimed that during her stay, her uncle took her to a hotel room where he gave her a cold drink spiked with sedatives, the Times of India reported.
When she fell unconscious, the accused raped her and shot a video of the assault on his cellphone, the victim alleged.
The woman further claimed that her uncle used the video to blackmail her and rape her several times in Allahabad and Kanpur over the past two years.
"When her uncle got to know that she was pregnant, he allegedly asked her to abort the pregnancy by giving her a pill," the DCP said.
According to the authorities, the accused and his son abducted the woman on Sunday and took her to a hotel room in the Chakeri area in Kanpur where they shot another video of her to further blackmail her.
"When she resisted, they started to hit her and threatened her with dire consequences. After escaping from their clutches, the woman made a call to the police helpline number and jumped into the river, but was saved by PRV personnel," the DCP said.
A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused police officer and his son.
No arrests have been recorded yet.
According to DCP (Traffic) BBGTS Murthy, the accused constable will be asked to go on leave after recording the victim's statement before the district magistrate.
A medical examination of the victim would also be conducted to confirm the charges, he added.
