A Highland Park, New Jersey man has been apprehended by police in Tennessee after he allegedly snatched his 2-year-old son from his mother's care on Friday. The matriarch was subsequently found dead in the forests of the Volunteer State, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The suspect, Tyler Rios, 27, has been charged with first-degree kidnapping for allegedly abducting his son and former partner Yasemin Uyar, 24, of Rahway. Charges connected to the death of Uyar are also pending against him, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.
New Jersey State Police issued an AMBER Alert on Friday afternoon after the young Rios failed to attend a daycare class and his mom did not show up for a scheduled work shift. Authorities conducted a multi-jurisdiction search for the mother and son.
They located the child early Saturday in Monterey, Tennessee, about 15 hours after police issued the AMBER Alert. The child was reportedly unscathed. It then led to the suspect's arrest, according to Fox News.
Uyar’s mother, Karen Uyar, broke the news later that day. She informed the media that police retrieved her daughter’s remains in a wooded area near I-40 in Tennessee after the suspect had allegedly confessed to police where he hid her corpse.
The Union County Prosecutor’s Office then confirmed Uyar’s death on Sunday. However, the Monterey police department did not provide additional information to the media.
The woman had a restraining order against Rios following historic domestic abuse offenses, according to the older Uyar. She claimed that Rios had previously choked her daughter and slammed her head into a wall, NJ.com reported.
“While my family grieves the loss of Yasemin, please remember she wasn’t just a (domestic violence) victim,” Uyar's mother wrote on a Facebook post announcing her death. “She was a daughter, sister, mother, aunt, and cousin. Her life will be celebrated as her greatest gift to this world.”
The victim had relocated several times due to safety concerns. She had planned to move once more just days before she went missing. The older Uyar last saw her daughter on Wednesday, noting when a phone call went unanswered that day, she was unsuspecting that something was wrong.
Rios is now in custody in Tennessee awaiting extradition to New Jersey, CBS New York noted.
