A woman from Columbus, Ohio was killed in a freak accident Monday night when her head got wedged between her car door and a parking payment machine. Police responded to a call from a security guard who reported the incident at around 5:40 am at a parking garage located at 45 Vine Street near the Arena District. The victim was identified as Victoria Strauss, 23, a graduate of Ohio State University.
In a statement from the Columbus Police Department, the accident occurred around 11:37pm based on retrieved security footage. Strauss could be seen on the camera exiting the parking garage when she dropped her card while paying for parking, People.com reported.
The woman opened her door and reached down to pick up her card but it would seem that she had accidentally stepped on her accelerator causing the vehicle to suddenly move forward. The victim’s head got stuck between the car door and the door frame as it collided with the payment kiosk.
The security guard found her unresponsive and called in the police. Strauss was pronounced dead at the scene by the paramedics.
In a story on The Columbus Dispatch, the victim was reportedly a native of Florida. She studied social work and graduated from Ohio State University.
The Columbus Police said it has recorded 9 vehicular crashes to date, resulting in 9 fatalities.
