A drunk driver with a previous record of intoxicated driving was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 22, after he crashed his car into the home of an elderly couple from Oregon, killing the woman and injuring her husband.
Sixty-seven-year-old Moira Hughes died at the scene in her home at Keizer, Oregon while her 63-year-old husband George Heitz was taken to a hospital due to the serious injuries he suffered when 41-year-old Andrew Modine crashed his car into their home, Oregon Live reported.
Modine, who was reported to be intoxicated, was unable to keep himself within the road while driving. He reportedly hit a power pole before finding himself spinning out of control and ramming into Hughes and Heitz’s home.
The inebriated suspect was arrested in the couple’s residence and charged with “first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, reckless endangering, reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, driving while criminally suspended, second-degree criminal mischief, and a probation violation.”
Modine has yet to make a statement regarding his arrest, but this would not be the first time that he has been nabbed for intoxicated driving. He was convicted in 2016 of driving under the influence, as well as charges of “failure to perform the duties of a driver to an injured person,” according to the Daily Beast.
In that accident, his brother Thomas Modine was riding in the passenger seat of a truck when he was thrown out of the vehicle while Andrew was turning left. Andrew left his brother in the street unconscious, where he was found by police officers before he died.
Andrew Modine was also charged with criminally negligent homicide for that case, but it was dismissed before he was sentenced to probation for five years.
Modine is currently being held in the Marion County Correctional Facility for the charges against him. It is not known as of press time if Modine will be allowed to post bail, KOIN reported.
