A woman on an American Airlines plane from Miami to New York is facing charges for allegedly attacking a flight attendant several times.
Chenasia Campbell, who is from Brooklyn, allegedly punched and grabbed hair of the staff member during the flight on Sunday after she intervened in an argument between Campbell and another attendant for not clearing her garbage, reported the Daily News.
A complaint was filed in the Eastern District of New York on Monday.
“I was in the sky with Jesus,” Campbell said while leaving Brooklyn Federal Court after her arraignment on Monday.
Denying the allegations against her, she said, “I didn’t hit a flight attendant."
Campbell's public defender, James Darrow, said during the hearing that his client is currently part of a mental health treatment program.
During the flight, Campbell also argued with a passenger before confronting the attendant again and cursing at her.
“Cops aren’t going to do anything to me,” she allegedly shouted as she hit the victim again and the two fell on the floor.
Prosecutors said that Campbell also tried to rip the flight attendant’s dress off.
An off-duty NYPD officer, who was also on the plane, stepped in and placed the out of control passenger in restraints. She was taken off the plane after it landed at JFK Airport and was placed into police custody, reported NBC New York.
Campbell was arrested when they landed and charged with “interference with flight crew members and attendants.” When asked about her traveling companion, Campbell said that she was flying with Jesus.
Campbell was let go after her mother signed a $15,000 bail package. “Be good and get rich,” she told reporters outside the courthouse. While in court, she gave the middle finger to photographers.
The flight attendant who was attacked, suffered several injuries -- including scrapes, bruises, and a strained neck, but refused medical attention.
This is not the first time Campbell has landed in legal trouble. She was reportedly arrested in August 2020 for attacking a woman using a walker. Campbell struck the woman’s walker to the ground and then hit her, an unnamed source said. In that case, she pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
