Police in Wisconsin made a horrific discovery last month, finding several children living in "deplorable" conditions after conducting a well-being check, according to a report.

Madison police said they received a report on February 28 that seven children had been left alone for about a week. Officers went to the apartment around noon and found the children alone, living in "deplorable" conditions, and determined that the children's mother was in Illinois.

"On Friday around noon, our team was contacted by (Child Protective Services)," Madison Police Department PIO Stephanie Fryer told WSAW-7. "Some people living in that building called and said, 'Hey, it seems like kids have been left alone for a while'."

Fryer described to the station what police found when they went to the home.

"The children were between two and 13 years old. In this case, there were reports of garbage cans overflowing, broken toilets, feces and urine piling up, and just clothes strewn about," Fryer told WSAW-7.

Police said that Child Protective Services were contacted, and the children were placed in the care of a family friend. Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
