Winter Storm Nemo pummelled N.Y. and N.J. on Friday, blanketing the city and outer boroughs.
But what's in store for Nemo on Friday night and Saturday?
New England is expected to get the worst of Winter Storm Nemo, with an estimated 20 inches or more between Friday and Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, only six storms in Boston have been as strong as Winter Storm Nemo. In 1892, 20 inches covered the New England city. Winter Storm Nemo may not break the 2003 record that piled up 27.5 inches in Boston. If the city gets 18.2 inches ore more, though, Winter Storm Nemo will rank as one of New England's worst blizzards.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was quick to close schools on Friday. "We are hardy New Englanders, let me tell you, and used to these types of storms. But I also want to remind everyone to use common sense and stay off the streets of our city. Basically, stay home," Menino told Reuters. "Stay put after noontime tomorrow."
WeatherWorks meteorologist Sean Rowland warned Northeast residents to prepare for the worst. "Part of what's been done [to restore beaches after Superstorm Sandy] will be undone," Hayes said.
As Winter Storm Nemo heads to New England on Friday, it is expected to escalate. Meteorologists are predicting 2 to 3 feet of snow and winds up to 70 mph. That switch from rain and snow to just snow will likely occur between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Conditions will be "deteriorating as we go through the evening rush," Rowland said.
The next National Weather Service update will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by another at 12:30 p.m. and every three hours after that for the duration of the storm, Hayes said. You can watch the storm arrive on AccuWeather's radar.
