A winning Powerball ticket was sold in Michigan on January 1, 2024, entitling the person to a jackpot that is over $842 million at the time of the drawing.

It is the fifth largest Powerball jackpot in U.S. history, the 10th largest overall and the first time it's been won on the first day of the year since its conception over 30 years ago, in 1992.

According to The Associated Press, the chance of winning the Powerball is one in over 292 million. The winning numbers drawn were: 12, 21, 42, 44, 49 and red Powerball: 1.

The ticket holder will now be able to decide whether to cash a lump sum of $425.2 million right now or be given the overall sum, $842.2 million, over 30 years. Both alternatives will have to be deducted taxes, which are as high as 37% before taking into account potential state taxes.

There were other top-winning tickets, although none of them got close to the aforementioned sum: tickets in California, Connecticut, Florida and Maryland matched all five white balls, earning them $1 million prizes, while two others, in Florida and Texas, also matched the Power Play, entitling to $2 million prizes.

The largest-ever Powerball jackpot awarded took place on November 7, 2022, when the winner took $2.04 billion. The second-highest was relatively recent, in October 2023, when the player won an estimate of $1.73 billion.
