A Michigan woman is celebrating her fortuitous change of plans after an abrupt decision to forego a vacation and stay home resulted in an unexpected lottery windfall.

"I really wanted to go on a vacation a few weekends ago, but we ended up staying home and went out to dinner that Saturday night instead," Traci Verbowski told Michigan Lottery.

Verbowski took home a $500,000 cash prize after stopping by a 7-Eleven on her way back from dinner and using her winnings from a pair of small-prize tickets to purchase a $5 Detroit Lions scratch-off.

"When I scratched one of the tickets and saw I won $500,000, I yelled, 'I think I just won a lot of money!'," Verbowski said. "I showed my family the ticket and no one could believe what they were seeing. I haven't slept a full night since because I have been so anxious and excited to come claim my prize."

She added: "I'm so glad we ended up not going on vacation that weekend, because if we did, I wouldn't be here claiming $500,000!"

The Kawkawlin resident visited the Michigan Lottery headquarters recently to claim her prize. She said she plans to buy a boat and then save the rest of her winnings.

"I have been a Detroit Lions fan my whole life," Verbowski told the Lottery. "So it was extra exciting to win on the new Detroit Lions game!"
