Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle aren’t the best of friends. The silent animosity shared between the duchesses is an open secret. The past is laden with instances where the evident differences between Kate and Meghan came to light. Thus, a rather interesting question by netizens ought to be addressed— Would Kate, who is future Queen consort, have an edge over Meghan when she becomes the Queen? Would Meghan require to be taking orders from Catherine once she becomes Queen?

The question evoked myriad responses on Quora, but people majorly are of the opinion that the Duchess of Cambridge will not be in the position to bark orders on Meghan. “Catherine, as Queen Consort, is unlikely to demand bootlicking from everyone down the pecking order,” Frances Powell said. “So she won't be “giving orders,” Powell added. In all likelihood, the power to decide on who does would be entrusted upon Prince William—and would lead to discussions.

Quashing assumptions of Meghan having to take “orders” from Kate, a volley of users were of the opinion that the British Royal Family would probably be in a different space altogether. Since Prince William will not become a King in another two decades, the question doesn’t hold much relevance in the current context.

“The chances are that in 25 or so years’ time when Prince William becomes king, as most royals do, they will all be very involved with their own roles,” Daise Kendrick said. “Assuming the Sussex’s are still working on behalf of the monarchy, they will have close discussions about projects, charities, patronages and so on, as they all do now. I doubt the Duchess of Sussex has any issues now fulfilling her role, and she won’t in the future. The Duchess of Sussex is not one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s staff. She is another royal who will work alongside her and support her and her husband,” Kendrick added.

What needs to be noted is that the question holds little significance, as royals follow a protocol—which is far from seeing the Queen “ordering” other royals around. The British Royal Family is far from a military hierarchy. What needs to be factored in is that Kate will become Queen Consort, not a Queen Regnant. As per the protocol, the ‘wife of' the King is given due respect and irrefutably holds precedence over royal members. However, nobody is under the obligation to listen to the “orders” given by the wife of the King. Indeed, it is safe to surmise that Meghan has little to worry about, of a time when Kate becomes Queen.
