A man from India's West Bengal's Howrah district made the ultimate sacrifice to secure his daughter's future, only to be betrayed in the worst way.

His wife, who he's been with for 16 years, nagged him to sell one of his kidneys for more than a year and insisted it was the only way to afford their 12-year-old daughter's education. He finally relented and agreed to a deal worth Rs 10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD). The surgery took place last month, and he brought the money home in hopes it would pave the way for his child's future.

Then, his world shattered.

"One day she left the house and did not return. I later found the entire amount of Rs 10 lakh in cash, along with some more, was missing from the almirah," the man told IndiaTV.

With help from friends and family, he tracked her down to Barrackpore, a northern suburb of Kolkata -- approximately 25 miles away from their home -- where she was allegedly spotted living with her lover.

The wife had allegedly been having an affair with the man for the past year after meeting him on Facebook, according to a legal complaint.

When confronted at her lover's house by her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter, she refused to come outside. Her new partner added fuel to the fire, reportedly telling them she planned to file for divorce and would claim she was physically and emotionally "tortured."

The woman also claimed she only left with her own savings. However, her husband alleged she looted $12,000, the entire kidney cash.

Police are reviewing video footage of the confrontation and have launched an investigation. Authorities plan to question the woman and her lover before deciding next steps.
