A shoplifter was caught in Georgia after managing to steal several thousands of dollars worth of goods from Walmart using a common technique, but what made his case grab headlines is his bizarre name: Speedy Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was caught by surveillance cameras stuffing a trash can with more expensive goods and only scanning the larger item at the self-checkout, a tactic known as the "banana trick."

Local police said that Gonzalez managed to steal from stores over 20 times before being caught in Georgia. Officers detailed that he was trying to steal nicotine products, gum, diabetic test strips and other items. He was caught after returning to attempt the same trick ten days later. Police then searched his car and found goods linking him to crimes across North Georgia.

"He would then pick out an item from the shelf, such as a trash can. In one instance, it was a mailbox... Then take all those items, stick it into the box with the larger item, and then take that, pay for it, and walk out of the store," said Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook to FOX 5 Atlanta when explaining the case.

Gonzalez is currently detained in the Barrow County jail on felony charges. He stands accused of other thefts in Hall, Barrow, Gwinnett, Habersham, White and Lumpkin Counties.
