Queen Elizabeth avoided meeting Kate Middleton for five years while she was still dating Prince William. However, this didn’t mean that Her Majesty disliked the Duke of Cambridge’s then girlfriend.

Prince William and Kate started dating while they were still students at the University of St. Andrews. However, the couple broke up twice. Following their second split in 2007, Prince William reportedly told his grandmother that he was unsure about his relationship with the Duchess of Cambridge.

After the couple got back together a few months later, the Queen waited another year before she finally met Kate. The monarch reportedly steered clear from the mom of three until she was certain that her relationship with Prince William was serious.

In 2010, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sat down for their engagement interview. The latter revealed that she met the Queen for the first time at Peter and Autumn Phillips’ wedding. The royal couple wed on May 17, 2008.

Throughout the years, Kate has developed a close relationship with Her Majesty. In the documentary “Queen At 90,” Prince William’s wife revealed which engagement with the monarch was most memorable for her. She said that she had a wonderful time during their visit to Leicester.

“I went without William, so I was rather apprehensive about that … She was very supportive,” she said. “The fact she took the time to make sure that I was happy and looked after for that particular occasion, which probably in everything that she’s doing is a very small element, it shows just how caring she really is,” Kate added.

A source also told US Weekly that the Queen has been a real mentor to Kate. Since the Duchess of Cambridge will become queen consort one day, Her Majesty has reportedly taken her under her wing.

“The two of them will often spend hours discussing royal life and the future of the monarchy,” the source said. “There has been some rigorous instruction, too. The Queen will give intense one-on-one training [to Kate] about taking on the crown,” the source added. A second source told the publication that Kate feels prepared for her future role as queen consort.
