Prince William once had a heartfelt conversation with Queen Elizabeth II regarding his relationship with Kate Middleton. Several years ago, the Duke of Cambridge told his grandmother that he didn’t love the Duchess of Cambridge enough.

In 2007, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge decided to call it quits for the second time. Royal expert Camilla Tominey said that the main reason for their second breakup was because Prince William was unsure of what he was feeling for Kate.

“After they split up, William confided to his grandparents that he was not sure if he loved Kate enough,” a source told Tominey. But Prince William still decided to get back together with Kate eventually.

After rekindling their romance, the Queen encouraged Prince William to do the right thing: either marry Kate or let her go. “She would rather they broke up for good now than get married only to have it end in divorce in five years’ time. But if Kate is the one, then a five-year courtship is long enough,” the source said.

Prince Philip also gave Prince William a wonderful reminder. He told the future king that he can’t keep stringing Kate along forever. The Duke of Edinburgh gave Prince Charles a similar advice years ago while he was dating Princess Diana. This is why Prince Charles ultimately decided to propose to the Princess of Wales.

Meanwhile, after getting back together in 2007, Prince William waited for three more years before proposing to Kate. The dad of three knelt down on one knee while on a holiday in Kenya.

While speaking with CNN during the royal couple’s engagement interview, Prince William said that he really wanted the proposal to mean something. “I regularly daydream,” he said. “Africa is definitely one of the places I go to. It does completely settle me down. Kate understands what it means to me being in Africa and my love of conservation. I really didn’t plan it that far in advance. I just knew I wanted it to feel comfortable where I did it,” he added.
