Princess Diana reportedly lived a miserable life with the royal family. A documentary also revealed that she was like a prisoner in a cell.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton published a book called “Diana: Her True Story” in 1992, which was around the same time that Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ separation was made public. Other than the shocking revelations in the biography, some royal fans were also surprised to know that the Princess of Wales herself helped Morton with his book by recording tapes and handing them to the author through her friend James Colthurst.
Last month, Morton opened up about his exchanges with Princess Diana in the Channel 5 documentary “Royals At War.” Upon hearing Princess Diana’s voice in the tapes, Morton said that she sounded like a prisoner in a cell.
“She was absolutely miserable and she felt like she was a prisoner of the Palace,” he said. “She felt she needed to speak out. Well, she chose me, thankfully, because I was independent and I was sympathetic to her cause,” Morton added.
However, Morton also admitted to not being prepared for the cascade of information that he got from the mom of two. The author did not also anticipate the controversy that he would face because of it.
“Boy, was I surprised,” he said. “I put my headphones on, switched on the tape recorder and out came this cascade of emotion. She was speaking like a prisoner in a cell who just had a few minutes to get the story out.”
Some of Princess Diana’s stories focused on her misery and unhappiness. Morton said that he was shocked with all the revelations, especially since he felt like he had entered a parallel universe.
Four years later, Princess Diana and Prince Charles finalized their divorce. The former couple’s children lived with their dad in the palace, but they also got to spend time with their mom.
One year later, Princess Diana passed away following a fatal car crash in Paris, which broke the hearts of Prince William and Prince Harry. At that time, Prince William was just 15 years old, and Prince Harry was 12 years old.
