Princess Diana and Prince Charles had a turbulent marriage. But things got much worse after the birth of Prince Harry.
In the Channel 5 documentary “The Royal Family At War,” it was revealed that the late Princess of Wales cried herself to sleep after giving birth to her youngest son. Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former royal butler, detailed the conversation he had with the royal.
“Diana said to me, ‘The night Harry was born, I cried myself to sleep,’” Burrell said. “After Harry was born, the Prince of Wales came to the room that night to look at the baby in the cot. He commented on ‘its red hair,’” he added.
Princess Diana told Prince Charles that Prince Harry must have inherited his ginger hair from his Spencer side of the family. Burrell said that this propelled the future king to sarcastically say that he now has an heir and a spare, in reference to his two sons.
After the encounter, Prince Charles went off to the movie theater and left Princess Diana at home. But royal editor Ingrid Seward said that things hadn’t always been sad and difficult for the Prince and Princess of Wales.
“There was a period, and I suppose it was after William was born when they were very happy,” she said. “But it didn’t last for very long,” she added.
Royal author Katie Nicholl seconded Seward’s statement by saying that by the time the Duke of Sussex was born, he was born into his parents’ unhappy marriage. “I think Diana very much hoped that he would be the band-aid to keep the marriage together, but it wasn’t to be,” she said.
In Nicholl’s book “William And Harry,” the royal author also said that Prince Charles snubbed Prince Harry and Princess Diana after she gave birth. After they returned home from the hospital, Prince Charles sped off in his Aston Martin to play polo in Windsor Great Park.
Years later, Princess Diana told her friends that something inside of her died following the incident. And Prince Charles’ comments about Prince Harry’s appearance crushed the late royal.
