Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just surprised the public again with their latest move. The royal couple shockingly unfollowed everyone on their official Instagram account on Thursday.
However, the recent unfollowing spree wasn’t necessarily intended to be a snub. Prince Harry and his wife explained that they want their millions of followers to nominate their forces of change. Throughout the month of August, they will be selecting individuals or organizations to follow.
“For the month of August, we look to you for help,” the post read. “We want to know who YOUR Force for Change is. Over the next few days please add your suggestions into the comments section: someone you look up to, the organization doing amazing work that we should all be following, an account that inspires you to be and do better (or that simply makes you feel good), or the handle that brims with optimism for a brighter tomorrow,” they added.
Force for Change is also the theme of Meghan’s special issue for British Vogue. The Duchess of Sussex guest edited the piece after interviewing 15 trailblazers. She also had the opportunity to interview former First Lady Michelle Obama.
However, the “Suits” alum’s recent attempt to reach out to her and Prince Harry’s millions of followers did not escape criticisms. The former Hollywood star was trolled by Prince William and Kate Middleton’s supporters, who posted their name as their forces for change. According to The Sun, comments that mentioned the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were deleted.
Meanwhile, Prince William and Kate have not unfollowed select individuals and charities from their official Instagram page. At present, the royal couple is still following 89 accounts, including Prince Harry and Meghan’s page.
Prince Harry and Meghan decided to create their own Instagram page months ago after they announced their decision to split from Prince William and Kate. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will now be operating their offices from Buckingham Palace, while Prince William and Kate will continue their work at Kensington Palace.
Royal expert Rebecca English told Daily Mail that the royal couple decided to move out of Kensington Palace due to their growing family. “[He] wants to escape the goldfish bowl of royal life for the sake of his marriage and his unborn child,” she said before Archie was born.
