“Jane The Virgin” has been canceled after its fifth season last month, but fans are still talking about the show. Gina Rodriguez plays the role of Jane in the hit The CW series.

Throughout the five seasons of “Jane The Virgin,” the show managed to tackle major issues that are affecting thousands of people in the United States. This includes immigration and immigration reform, abortion, religion, infertility, cancer and more.

While speaking with BuzzFeed News, showrunner Jennie Urman explained why they decided to create a series of storylines about immigration. She said that the issue affects so many families in the Latino community.

“We decided at the beginning of our season that Alba would be in this country illegally and discussed ways that this would be brought up and how it would affect our characters and their decisions,” she said. “We know how important [this issue] is to the community we are representing. The hope is by personalizing this issue and playing it out through beloved characters, we can make the political, personal... and hopefully raise consciousness and compassion,” she added.

And when it came to abortion, the characters in “Jane The Virgin” made it clear that as women, they have the right to choose what they want to do with their bodies. These storylines were quite tricky because Jane and her family are Christians. Additionally, “Jane The Virgin” also presented storylines showing how difficult it is for some women to conceive.

Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) also found out that she had breast cancer. And this storyline provided some insight into the various health issues that women are facing. “Jane The Virgin” also managed to successfully show cold-cap therapy as an option for women undergoing chemotherapy.

Following its cancelation, “Jane The Virgin” is still widely talked about across the globe, not only because of the wide range of issues they tackled. Ivonne Coll, who played the role of Alba, also said that it’s very rare for shows to feature three female Latinas navigating through the ins and outs of their lives.

“Jane The Virgin” previously announced that it will release a spinoff series this year. However, Urman said that they have decided to leave things as they are.
