What’s The Status Of Selena Gomez And Demi Lovato’s Friendship?

When Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato debuted in Hollywood when they were 10, nobody thought they would turn out to be the defining stars of their generation. As they spread their wings outside of Disney — reaching greater heights, figuring out love, standing up to bullies, battling depression and skating through every aspect of growing up — the once inseparable friends have grown apart. And now, with news about them few and far between, fans are clamoring to know — what’s the real status of Selena Gomez’s friendship with Demi Lovato?

The last time fans heard about them was in November, when Lovato deliberately unfollowed Gomez on Instagram. At the time, Lovato was reportedly struggling with staying sober. Her doctors advised her to stay away from negativity and do some purging of her inner circle. And so she did, even if that meant having to unfollow her former celebrity besties Nick Jonas, Iggy Azalea and Gomez. Since getting rid of them from her personal bubble, Lovato has never followed Gomez again.

At the time of Lovato’s purging, Lovato and Gomez had not been close in a while. They started to establish relationships with other young stars, and their paths diverged. As Lovato grew close to Miley Cyrus, Gomez found a new friend in Taylor Swift. And just like that, what started as a seemingly enduring friendship went south.

Fans have lost count of how many times Lovato has unfollowed and re-followed Gomez on social media and has thrown bits of real shade at her during interviews. But it wasn’t all consistent. One day she tells the press she could not trust Gomez. The next day, they are arm in arm on the red carpet again.

Despite their relationship being on the rocks, Gomez has remained silent and even reached out to her in private when her childhood bestie accidentally overdosed in July 2018. According to Gomez, she had known Lovato since they were seven, and she would always love her.

Like waves, Lovato and Gomez’s friendship has risen and fallen over the years. And while it looks like Lovato has no interest whatsoever in rekindling her friendship with Gomez anytime soon, considering how their friendship has been through the years, seeing the childhood besties get close again isn’t that far-fetched after all.
