When Meghan Markle announced that she was marrying Prince Harry of the British royal family, her American fans couldn’t wait to witness their union. Although controversies started to surround their marriage soon after their royal wedding, it seems that most Americans choose to remain supportive of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan was a regular cast member of the top-rated American TV series “Suits” when she met Prince Harry. It’s understandable why the British prince found it so easy to fall for her. She’s not only beautiful, but she’s also intelligent, articulate and charismatic.
Considering that the lives they lived before their union were poles apart, it’s undeniable that the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan is one for the books. Unfortunately, as the cultures of the countries from which they were born and raised come into play, the Americans and the Brits seem to have differing opinions of their union.
For most Americans, Meghan’s decision to marry Prince Harry was good in the sense that it has brought American culture under the universal lens. According to former professor Gwendolyn Hendrix McGregor Scherer, Meghan’s American upbringing is the main reason that the Brits can’t stand her.
“I think as time passes, more Americans find her self-possession, generosity in humanitarian issues, and her stoic ability to withstand the barrage of negativity that came her way, as the definition of an American,” she said. “I don’t think that many in Britain have traveled much beyond the boundaries of their homeland so some of their comments about her, read on several UK media response sections, display various levels of ignorance about America and Americans,” she added.
Adam Nyhan, another American, also noted that the negative write-ups about Meghan come mostly from the British press but that it doesn’t matter as long as a nice guy like Prince Harry stands by her. “For people who are super wealthy royalty and live a life very different from the rest of us, they actually seem like pretty nice and chill people,” he said.
“I mean, the bearded groom guy, he never had to work a day in his life, but he still went into the military service in his country, which is a lot more impressive than anything done by the sons of the j**ka**s who is currently the President in my country, so I have respect for that,” he added.
