Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle is reportedly causing the royal family financial woes. While their financial troubles are more felt now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are already married, the troubles reportedly started to ensue even before they tied the knot.
Prince Harry and Meghan started dating in 2016, when Meghan was still part of the cast of the hit US legal drama “Suits.” Although it was clear that the couple was deeply besotted at that time, their happiness reportedly came at a costly price not only to Prince Harry but to the entire royal family as well.
When Prince Harry and Meghan got engaged in November 2017, Meghan moved from Los Angeles to the UK. As they prepared for their royal wedding, however, Prince Harry’s communications secretary reportedly advised Meghan to be compliant with immigration requirements at all times. This is because as early as then, she had already thrown herself into the life of a British royal despite not being a British citizen.
“I can also say she intends to become a U.K. citizen and will go through the process of that, which some of you may know takes a number of years,” said the secretary.
He went on to explain that since Meghan is still an American citizen, she needs to pay tax in the US for any income or allowance she earns. These include items such as gifts, homes, earnings from her acting career and clothes.
While that may not sound like a financial woe, Prince Harry’s secretary explained that since Prince Harry is married to Meghan, the US tax office may also request taxation from Harry’s income. This means that the £10 million and £7 milllion inheritance that he received after Princess Diana’s death could be subject to American taxation.
The secretary also noted that this could be a burden for Prince Harry and the royal family since they already pay annual income tax on this inheritance in the UK. In fact, even the income attributed to their baby, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, may be taxed by the American government.
According to reports, the royal family has already hired US tax experts to help them navigate their involvement with the US tax system because of Meghan Markle. The only way that the royal family can avoid the US tax system is if Meghan finally renounces her US citizenship and fully embrace her life as a British citizen.
