Wayne Knight, “Seinfeld” actor, was victim of an internet death hoax, when it was reported that he died in an accident involving a tractor trailer. No major news outlet confirmed the news. His death was fabricated. On Facebook, his death is trending, you will see links to “Us Weekly” and “TMZ,” but when you click on these links you are taken to phony sites and when you go to the real sites, there are no stories on his death.
He actually tweeted “Some of you will be glad to hear this, others strangely disappointed, but…I am alive and well!” Here is what part of the story from the fake Us Weekly said “Knight is dead and two other passengers are critically injured after their vehicle slammed into a disabled semi-tractor-trailer late Saturday night along Route 446 near the Pennsylvania-New York state border in Eldred Township.”
Obviously, people read about this and started believing he was dead. But no people, he was just the latest victim of internet death hoax. His supposed death has even been updated on Wikipedia.
After he realized he was trending on facebook he tweeted “Does someone have to DIE to trend? Geez! Thanks for all the love everybody. I didn’t know you cared. Glad to be breathing!”
Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Eminem and Morgan Freeman among others have been victims of internet death hoaxes. Definitely he is not the first celebrity to be falsely reported as dead.
