A man who was presumed to be dead and was buried by his family members reportedly returned home a day after he was laid to rest in Erode district, Tamil Nadu, India on Monday, April 4, to the shock of his kin.

On Sunday, April 3, after an unidentified dead body was found near the Sathyamangalam bus terminal, a man who had happened to also be in the area suspected that the remains belonged to his relative Moorthy, a daily wage worker.

He immediately alerted Moorthy's 28-year-old son, M Karthi, about the gruesome discovery. After receiving the phone call, Karthi rushed to the bus stop and confirmed that it was his father's body, the Indian Express reported.

Following this, the Sathyamangalam police retrieved the remains to conduct an autopsy. After the postmortem examination and other legal procedures, the body was handed over to Karthi later that evening. Following this, Moorthy's family members performed the final rites and held a funeral in his honor. They reportedly buried the remains the same night.

However, just 24 hours after the burial, on Monday, April 4, Moorthy walked into their home alive, much to the shock of his family members, the Times Of India reported.

"We couldn't believe our eyes when he entered the house," Karthi said.

Karthi attests that the dead body they found really did resemble his father.

"I was shocked to hear the news of my father's death. I was equally shocked when he returned home yesterday," Karthi added.

When the police questioned Moorthy, 55, it was revealed that he had left for Tirupur a few days ago to harvest sugarcane. However, since the work got delayed, he wasn’t able to come back home on time.

"I returned home when the work was over," Moorthy told the officers.

According to the authorities, Moorthy and the person who was found dead near the bus stand had strikingly similar appearances.

"Even Moorthy’s wife, who wept for two-three hours hugging the dead body, said she thought it was her husband and wasn’t able to make out any difference,” A Napolean, Inspector of Sathyamangalam police station, said.

Following the incident, the Sathyamangalam police have resumed their inquiry to confirm the identity of the deceased. They have also issued notices to the nearby towns and hilly areas to contact them about information regarding friends or family members who were missing.
